On Sunday, Turkish police arrested five individuals for allegedly spreading "hateful messages" against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The five detainees would have published jokes on social media about the president's covid-19 contagion.

About 36 accounts were investigated by the cybercrime unit for posting the taunts against the president.

They gave the order to arrest eight people, but so far they have only found five.

Derya Büyükuncu is the name that stands out the most on the list, since he is an Olympic swimmer who has been retired for ten years.

The athlete would have sarcastically responded to the president's publication where he asked for prayers for his healing.

Büyükuncu would have posted on his Twitter account that he would prepare sweets to distribute when "the time comes", referring to the local custom of distributing sweets after a funeral.

Minutes later the athlete deleted the message. “Helva”, the name of the sweet from Turkey, became a trend on the social network after Büyükuncu sarcastically expressed the wish for the death of President Erdogan.

The Turkish authorities have not been able to apprehend Büyükuncu because it has been confirmed that he is not in the country.

President's statements

Erdogan, in his morning broadcast, assured that he has not had any complications.

He emphasized how mild the disease has been, therefore, he assured that he will continue in his presidential duties from home with his wife, Emine Erdogan, who has also been infected.

In the morning hours, Erdogan sent thanks via Twitter to all the heads of state and governments that have asked for his speedy recovery.

Among the countries that have sent messages of support to the Turkish president, Guatemala, Greece, Serbia, El Salvador and Somalia stands out.
