This Tuesday the Government of Japan reacted negatively after Russia left the World War II peace treaty talks with Japan, also freezing all the economic projects they had in common related to the Kuril Islands, due to sanctions. imposed by Tokyo for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Russia and Japan have not yet formally finalized the talks about the Second World War treaty due to the confrontations with the Islands that are located in front of an Island in Japan, the northernmost in the region, Hokkaido, better known in Russia by Kuriles and for Japan the Northern Territories. This Island was taken over by the Soviets at the end of World War II.

Statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry

"Under the current conditions, Russia has no intention of continuing negotiations with Japan on a peace treaty, openly unfriendly positions of Japan and its attempts to harm the interests of our country."

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he opposed Russia's decisions, calling them unfair and completely unacceptable.

"This whole situation has been created by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and Russia's response to push this into Japan-Russia relations is extremely unfair and completely unacceptable," he also said that Japan's attitudes towards pursuing a treaty of peace had not changed and that they had protested the Russian measure.
Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said, "My country has lodged a protest with the Russian ambassador in Tokyo."

Due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Japan announced last week its plans to revoke Russia's most-favored-nation status for trade, ban exports of various products and freeze assets against Russian elites.

Japan also announced that it will send food and medical aid to all Ukrainians and has also started accepting all evacuees from Ukraine and has asked for the support of the population.

Putin's words from last year

President Vladimir Putin said last year that Moscow and Russia wanted to have and maintain good relations, also warming to the absurdity that they had not reached a peace agreement.

Russia not only withdrew from the WWII peace talks, but also withdrew from the Kuril Islands joint business talks, having already ended the visa exemption for all Japanese citizens..
