Miami Beach declares curfew and state of emergency
This measure will come into force from this March 24 and will end on the 28 of the same month.
The government of Miami Beach in Florida, United States, reported this Thursday that a state of emergency was imposed along with a curfew in this city, due to the riots and shootings carried out in the early hours of last Sunday and Monday, where five people were injured.
The curfew came into effect this Thursday, March 24 and will last until the next 28 of the same month, as reported by the city administration, through a press release.
For her part, the city administrator, Alina Hudak, mentioned at the press conference that this measure will only work from 23rd Street, to its limit located to the south of the city.
Hudak, detailed before declaring the state of emergency, that this decision was carried out in order to apply the curfew after the riots. Likewise, he noted that for the one that will be approved next week, they will require a request to the plenary session of the Miami Beach Council.
After the riots occurred, Miami Beach local police chief Richard Clements held a press conference, where he revealed that in the last four weeks, department officials seized more than 100 firearms, of which 75 were this last weekend.
The popular "spring vacations" (Spring Break), are the perfect excuse for hundreds of young people to have beach meetings to celebrate this season. In the case of Miami Beach, Ocean Drive is one of the most visited streets, due to the large number of businesses, nightclubs and bars that exist in its vicinity.
Presumably, it was in this area where the events of last weekend occurred and something similar happened in 2021, when these same parties left one dead and thousands injured, which led the authorities at that time to implement an operation to seize all the drugs and also declared a curfew.
Despite the above, some residents of this area raised protests against this decision, since they consider that it limits their regular activities, in addition to increasing the police presence, generating a decrease in visitors and, therefore, affects sales in local businesses.
