New York: Suspends around 9,000 employees for not wanting to get vaccinated
This Monday, the news was released that around 9,000 employees have been suspended without pay for refusing to comply with the vaccination order against Covid-19, which came into effect that same day. This has been reported by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
All of these employees have been New York City workers, so it has become a city with a lot of unemployed right now. It is estimated that at least nine out of 10 municipal employees were vaccinated.
Despite all the people suspended just this Monday, for now there have been no known alterations to municipal services due to the shortage of employees. New York has more than 300,000 municipal employees right now, or so De Blasio has made it known.
The suspension of workers still does not affect services
Fire stations have remained open, while sanitation workers have made extra turns to make sure trash doesn't pile up in some places. This is what Mayor Blasio has expressed.
"I want to thank everyone who has been vaccinated. Thank you for getting vaccinated. Thank you for being on the right side and allowing us to move forward." Indico De Blasio.
For now, city officials continue to fight strong resistance from a minority of public safety workers, including some firefighters and police officers. As well as what generates the legal challenge to the mandate presented by the largest police union in the entire city.
For this past Sunday, one in four uniformed firefighters in New York had not yet received the first dose of the vaccine, as was already required in that institution. So it can be said that one out of every six policemen was not yet vaccinated, as were the health workers.
Weekend vaccination
During the past weekend around 3,500 municipal employees were vaccinated, considering that the deadline was until Friday at 5 in the afternoon to collect a bonus of 500 dollars if they demonstrated that they had received the first dose of the vaccine, but in the proposed time.
While the director of the union that represents the New York City fire department, and who has been constantly fighting against vaccination mandates, warned that public safety may be in danger.
This is how the fire department has said that they are prepared to take at least 20% of their workers out of service, so the institution would have up to 20% less presence on the streets with ambulances traveling.
During a press conference, the President of the Uniformed Firefighters Association Andrew Ansbro, commented: "We are here today because of the mandate that was imposed not only on our members, but on all employees of New York City. "
"Those who have been given a period of nine days to make a decision that will determine the course of their career or if they are not going to be vaccinated or if" assured Andrew Ansbro.
In the same way, De Blasio has assured that the main priority of New York's public safety is to be able to stop the spread of the coronavirus, so forcing people to get vaccinated is the only way to try to end the pandemic.
Keep in mind that in New York people die every day from Covid-19.
