Texas will register 30 daily asylum applications through the Stay in Mexico plan
US authorities say they work to give greater guarantees to asylum seekers
The governments of the United States and Mexico resumed last Monday, December 6, the controversial plan "Stay in Mexico" and there has been a lot of expectation about how the response to those who request asylum in North America and their wait in Mexico will work.
The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in El Paso, Texas has said through a statement that it will register 30 daily asylum applications through the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), the real name of the program started by Donald Trump and that Joe Biden has been forced to execute.
According to the CBP statement, Mexico has had to make humanitarian improvements to admit acceptance of MPP affiliates.
According to reports from the University of Texas, on the binational border more than 26,500 people have requested asylum and are waiting in the Aztec country for the date on which the hearing will be held in the United States to find out if their application will be admitted.
Likewise, with the implementation of the MPP, some 70,000 people who had already requested asylum and were in the United States had to be returned to Mexico to await their response, before their request was canceled in January of this year.
The Stay in Mexico measure
The Stay in Mexico plan was an initiative of former President Donald Trump, who sought to stop migration to his country, and forced those seeking asylum to wait for their response in Mexico.
With the arrival of Joe Biden to power, it was expected that this action would be reversed, however a judge ordered it to be resumed.
The plan has been strongly criticized by defenders of migrants and human rights, and in response the Biden administration has shown that its hands are tied, since it has been the court that has forced it to comply with this measure.
However, the White House appears to be seeking to provide guarantees to asylum seekers, so some changes were made to the program through the Department of Homeland Security ; among them: providing safe havens and transportation to asylum seekers.
They have also agreed to set a period of 6 months from when the migrant enters Mexico to respond to them.
On the other hand, it is known that the migrants returned to Mexico will be located in seven border ports on the side of the Aztec country, where the US authorities together with the Mexican ones will guarantee humanitarian protection.
Similarly, the processed migrants will have access to information and legal advice, telephones and free video calls with lawyers in a confidential manner, this last point is key, since previously 95% of asylum seekers did not have a lawyer.
Record number of migrants
According to data provided by the Migration Policy Unit of the Government of Mexico, between January and October of this year the authorities detected 228,115 migrants, which represents 64% more than the same period in 2020, while 82,627 have been deported., 27% more than in 2020.
Likewise, the institution has indicated that just over a fifth of the migrants detained this year are minors.
Likewise, in their report they detail that most of the migrants are from Central America, Honduras being the country from which the most people are reported, with 97,968; followed by Guatemala with 64,733, El Salvador with 18,988; Haiti with 17,516 and Nicaragua with 10,960.
