Cocaine was adulterated with carfentanil in Argentina.

Aníbal Fernández, Minister of the Interior of Argentina, published on his Twitter account that a strong opioid called carfentanil was found in adulterated cocaine, causing the intoxication of dozens of people, of whom 24 have died.

In addition, he assured that this substance could only have entered illegally by contraband.

Carfentanil was obtained in the analyzes carried out by two laboratories and they ensured that this opioid is 10,000 times more powerful than the same heroin or fentanyl.

The cases of deceased and intoxicated by the consumption of the adulterated drug were registered at the beginning of February in several areas of Buenos Aires.

According to official information issued by the local government of Buenos Aires, the total number of victims adds up to 21 deceased who would have consumed the drug, however, the Attorney General's Office has counted three more people.

The security minister of Buenos Aires, Sergio Berni, declared to local media indicating that carfentanil is a powerful sedative with a veterinary prescription for large animals, mostly used for elephants and rhinoceroses.

He assured that the dose equivalent to a grain of salt, causes the immediate death of those who consume it.

On the other hand, Francisco Pont Vergés, Secretary of Criminal Policy of Buenos Aires, assured that the authorities conducting the investigation are shocked by the use of the substance in the drug.

He explained that there are no records or intelligence reports warning of the legal or illegal entry of this drug into Argentina.

Pont detailed that not even abroad are there many records on the use of this drug.

The secretary indicated that there are several hypotheses, highlighting that this mixture could have been taken to Argentina in order to adulterate the cocaine, but a mistake arose with the mixture.

Thanks to the investigation carried out by the judicial authorities, they have managed to seize more than a thousand doses of the drug ready to consume and they coincide with the packaging acquired by those affected.

The aggrieved who consumed and, adulterated narcotic, collaborated with the authorities facilitating the drug sample to be analyzed by specialists.

Due to the fact, there are currently six people detained who are suspected of supplying this adulterated drug. Among the detainees is Joaquín Aquino "El Paisa", an alleged drug trafficker leader who had an arrest warrant since 2018.
