Eight deceased was the balance of the stampede in the stadium in Cameroon
The Minister of Communications, René Sadi, assured that the injured are being treated in only four emergency clinics.
Some 38 people were injured in the stampede that occurred Monday night at the southern entrance to Yaoundé's Olembe stadium, where the African Cup was taking place, in Cameroon's capital.
During the event, eight people died. According to the information collected by the fans, the errors were presented through the security powers, not to control access to the stadium. Fans were scaling the wall to get into the stadium.
The outrage occurred minutes before the important match between Cameroon and Comoros. It may have been caused by fans trying to circumvent COVID-19 controls.
At the entrance to the Cup event, people were required to present proof of immunization or negative tests. In addition, before entering the stadium, they had to go through welfare and security checks.
Images of people climbing walls to enter the stadium were shown on local television.
The Olembe stadium has a maximum limit of 60,000 people. Due to biosecurity measures, 40,000 people were going to be allowed. However, the government of Cameroon claimed that there were 57,000 people.
An observer reported that the avalanche occurred after security agents told spectators to go to an entrance that was closed. Someone opened that entrance and individuals pushed in, and thus the stampede was created.
Marie-Therese Asongafack, another witness, reported that at the moment the guards opened the door, after the individuals were nervous about not having the option to enter, they pushed the security agents aside and entered the stadium by force.
