Man dies after consuming approximately 200 cups of coffee
The autopsy showed that the reason for the man's death was the product of caffeine toxicity that was in his body, since it had more than 392 milligrams, with 78 being the permitted limit for consumption of this substance.
A resident of Bodelwyddan, UK, named Thomas Mansfield, died of a caffeine overdose from consuming a powdered product equivalent to 200 cups of coffee. This was announced on Tuesday by the local media.
The individual was 29 years old and worked as a security guard and was also a personal trainer, and more than a year ago he had ordered a package of powdered caffeine from the sports supplement company, Blakhburn Distributions, which arrived at his residence on 5 January 2021, but it was not until February 2022 that they began to ingest it.
The recommended dose was reflected on the product. The correct thing was to ingest between 70 to 250 milligrams twice a day. Despite this, when the man decided to try it, the digital scale was damaged, it had two grams of initial weight, so the portion he chose was high.
According to the victim's wife, Mansfield, he took a sip of the drink and within seconds downed the rest of the cup. Then he leaned back in the living room and placed his hands on his chest. After a few minutes, he realized that he was foaming at the mouth and immediately went out to get help.
The ambulance arrived at the scene and when carrying out the first aid work they determined that the man had an "extremely unusual" heart rhythm, a product of the cardiac arrest he had suffered. He was quickly transferred to the hospital, where he arrived without vital signs.
The autopsy showed that the reason for Mansfield's death was the product of caffeine toxicity that was in his body, since the man, for every liter of blood, had 392 milligrams of caffeine.
A person with blood caffeine levels above 78 milligrams is considered a person with toxicity. Mansfield was six times that number, which is why his demise was so quick and deadly.
John Gittins, Senior Medical Examiner for East Central North Wales, described Mansfield's death as disgraceful as the result he expected from consuming the powdered caffeine was unintended.
The wife of the deceased, Suzannah, wrote on her social networks "My world has been shattered and my children have lost their father." He also expressed "I have lost the love of my life. Tom passed away in the hospital, the family tried very hard, but it was not enough."
