Twitter removed thousands of accounts from 6 countries for participating in "manipulation campaigns"
The platform for the first time has published information on an operation of this type, where accounts from Mexico, China, Venezuela, Russia, Tanzania and Uganda were affected.
The social network has reported that the operations detected would be eight, all linked to leftist governments and are complemented by multiplying official information from said governments, something that the platform decided to sanction irreversibly.
Twitter currently uses an account control policy that it considers to be aligned with left-wing governments, firstly it places the label on official accounts that they are accounts affiliated with a government, secondly if they consider there is manipulation from that account, they take these measures.
China was the country most affected by the massive elimination of Twitter accounts
In the case of this country, the number rises to 2,048 accounts that the platform considers linked to Chinese information on the issue of the Uyghur people, a minority within the country that some media present as mistreated by the Chinese government.
To the previous 2,048 accounts, there are 112 profiles that the company detected as linked to private companies backed by the Chinese government, which share and disseminate official information.
Twitter removed 418 Ugandan accounts
Charged with representing an inauthentic posting operation, aimed at supporting the Ugandan National Resistance Movement government, the company decided to apply this irreversible sanction to more than 400 accounts in Uganda.
With these numbers, it becomes the second country most affected by the massive sweep of the Twitter company, actions directed against what they consider manipulating public opinion within countries and internationally.
In Venezuela, Twitter deleted 277 accounts in support of the Government of President Nicolás Maduro
In this case, Twitter's accusations are for "supporting and spreading official narratives." In the South American country, accounts of the left have already been sanctioned in various measures, and other social networks, for the first time such action is accepted with the number of affected.
Second, and as additional information, all accounts sanctioned in Venezuela had an application called "Twitter patria", authorized to access their profiles. Twitter also suspended the application and the accounts that administered it.
Mexico suffered a sanction of 276 accounts in the operation of the social network
In the continuation of a kind of operation against left-wing tweeters in certain countries, in Mexico 276 accounts that supported the López Obrador government were terminated.
This number is just one account less than those affected in Venezuela and places Mexico as the fourth country affected by this Twitter operation.
Tanzania was the 5th country affected by Twitter sanctions
The number of accounts eliminated in this country reached 268, and they are accused of presenting biased reports and content, basically to support the FichuaTanzania movement and its leader.
Some banned accounts participated very actively in the use and dissemination of the hashtag # chaguamagufuli2020, a tag used within a pro-government narrative that Twitter sanctioned.
Russia was affected 66 accounts on the social network
As the last country affected in terms of numbers we have Russia, where a total of 16 accounts were eliminated, accused by Twitter of benefiting Russia's image in Central Africa.
Likewise, 50 more accounts were eliminated for supporting Russia's actions in Libya and Syria, where the country has acted against the invading forces that continue to try to overthrow the government in Syria.
Justice or censorship?
As in the case of Donald Trump, the first President of the United States to be sanctioned by Twitter with the silencing of his account, in these cases an ideological political vision is presented that is impossible to avoid when judging the actions of the social network.
From one sector they claim for the few or no actions of Twitter against right-wing accounts that manipulate the facts, present fakenews and even violate the rules of Twitter. The other sector calls for a total elimination of the accounts on the left.
The only certain thing is that, although Twitter has been selective in sanctioning left-wing accounts in recent years, those that remain active are still millions, so there has not been a total sweeping operation against that sector so far.
In addition to the above, there is the case of Donald Trump, a powerful enemy president of almost all the countries mentioned, who was also affected by these policies.
Twitter maintains its emphasis on caring for integrity in conversations and publications on the network, something complex that will always require actions that some will reject and others will approve, in this case providing specific data to know the causes and details of their actions.
