World leaders concerned about the advance of omicron, a new variant of COVID-19
The omicron variant of the Coronavirus is currently present in Africa, Europe, Asia and America, where the leaders of different nations have begun to draw up strategies to try to control it; after the World Health Organization (WHO) itself warned that it represents an extremely high danger to the planet.
This mutation of the virus, identified for the first time in South Africa, is part of the extensive list of mutations that the COVID-19 has had, which has prompted international leaders and agents of world organizations to be on alert.
The director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was one of the first to affirm that the health emergency due to the Coronavirus has not ended, while demanding an immunization plan against COVID-19.
"All this will happen again except if you, the countries of the world, unite to say with one voice: never again!" Said the representative of the WHO, at the beginning of the World Health Assembly, the highest organ decision-making of the WHO that brings together 194 representatives.
Tedros added that the government has the responsibility to protect its people, and it is natural, but "equality in the distribution of vaccines is a charitable act, it is something that interests all countries because no one can get out of this pandemic alone."
The latest statements so far
UN
The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed his concern about the isolation of African countries located in the south of the continent, due to travel restrictions due to COVID-19.
In the southern part of the African continent, the omicron variant has spread rapidly.
"The people of Africa cannot be blamed for the immorally low level of vaccination available in Africa, and they should not be penalized for identifying and sharing crucial scientific and health information with the world," Guterres added in his statement.
Mexico
The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced this morning that there is no need to panic over the omicron variant in Mexico, which, according to specialists, no contagion has been detected in the country.
"I want to tell all Mexicans that we are carrying out a follow-up, that there are no elements to worry about, there are no risk reasons according to the reports that the specialists have given me. There is a lot of information in the media, that we should not give scare us because there is a lot of uncertainty, unconfirmed information, that's what I can say" said the Mexican president.
USA
Joe Biden also joined the list of presidents who have spoken out on the omicron variant, trying to calm Americans, indicating that "it is cause for concern, not panic."
"The best protection against this new variant or any of the variants that exist, with which we have already been grappling, is to get fully vaccinated and receive a booster shot," he told a news conference in The White House.
His words come after immunology expert Antony Fauci said: It was inevitable that the newly discovered variant would be registered in the United States.
The European Union
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said there was a race against time after the discovery of the Coronavirus variant. "We take this omicron variant very seriously, and we know we are in a race against time," said von der Leyen on his visit to Latvia.
