What is dysarthria?

As mentioned before, this is a disease where communication with other people is difficult. Specifically, it is a condition where the muscles that allow sounds to be articulated end up compromised.

As with other types of communication disorders, the causes are several, for example, in this case the factors that we can consider as causing this condition are Parkinson's disease, brain injuries, tumors, among others.

Both the causes and symptoms are determining factors when detecting this disease. In this sense, we can say that the sooner the disease is diagnosed, the sooner we can apply the treatment.

Returning to the cause of dysarthria, we previously named three possible causes,

Parkinson's disease

This well-known disease causes a decrease in the speed of movement and slowing down, as well as tremors. All of this can lead to decreased voice volume, lack of accentuation, and monotonous articulation of sounds.

Brain injury

Suffering from a brain injury can cause this type of disease, where the voice changes to nasalized, an articulation of the words that is interrupted frequently and problems to correctly stress some words.

Other diseases caused by dysarthria

In other diseases we find degenerative ones and brain tumors, since these cause distortion when pronouncing consonants correctly. In the same way, this type of disease can cause slowness of movement when speaking and problems for the voice to come out.

Apart from all the diseases mentioned, we cannot ignore strokes, cerebral palsies, Huntington's disease and others that lead to this condition.

Symptoms of dysarthria

The main symptom of this disease is the problems to speak, since as mentioned before it can lead to the voice coming out with difficulty when speaking.

Going a little further, in the symptoms of this condition we can say that dysarthria presents,

Speaking in whispers, Basically this disease prevents people from raising their voices or speaking normally.

Nasalized voice, As the name implies, it is a symptom where the voice is nasalized. The normal thing is that this happens without having any problem that prevents the passage of air towards the nose.

Babbling, When a person has dysarthria and wants to speak, they may change the sounds of the words, or suppress them.

Irregular rhythm, be it very slow or fast, a person with this condition can alternate between both. Making it difficult to understand them.

Monotony when speaking, Basically it is when a person's voice maintains the same tone, regardless of the context of the conversation.

Treatment for dysarthria

The first thing we should know is that the treatment of dysarthria will depend largely on what its cause is. At the same time, the doctor will look for the best treatment for the patient's evolution.

We must also bear in mind that there are specialists in this field such as speech therapists, who play a fundamental role in treatment.

They will receive various communication exercises, such as breathing, phonation, prosody, relaxation, etc. With them, it is achieved:

Reduce babbling.

Monotony in speech.

Correct the pace in which you speak.

Other specialists involved in the treatment of this condition are psychologists, because a person with dysarthria can end up withdrawing and suffering from depression.

Finally, we must mention that if the disease reaches a very serious level, the doctor may suggest a surgical intervention.
