Motorola Edge Complete Review
The Motorola Edge is not just another Motorola, maybe when you see it your design may remind you of the One range of this company. But it has little or nothing to do when we look at its oled screen, which by the way is quite curved.
This device is an interesting and eye-catching premium range, in fact some users have tested it for several days and analyzed all its features resulting in a pretty good impression.
Motorola Edge design
It is a phone that just takes it out of the box and draws your attention for its physical section and design section, for its materials and especially for the curved edge of the screen that lives up to its name.
At the rear, the company has forgotten about modules and thick implementations for the cameras and has opted for something simpler and that works better, such as the integration of the cameras in the chassis itself.
In this way, we have a module that practically does not come out at all, and it is something that is very much appreciated when using it.
The rear sector is finished in plastic and the unit is in a gloss black color that offers striking reflections depending on how the light falls on the device.
As for the sides, the right houses the volume and home buttons and is in a comfortable position. It also has a textured engraving that allows it to be located quickly.
The left side is completely empty, and above we have the slot for the nano sim micro SD card and a microphone.
At the bottom we have the USB type C charging port, a 3.5 mm jack input for the headphones. Which by the way, the Motorola Edge comes with headphones in the box, and we also have the module for the loud voice.
The best of all is that this model is a large device, but it is not heavy, since light weight of 188 grams.
The Motorola Edge integrates a 67-inch oled panel with full HD plus resolution in 49 formats with ninth, that is, 385 pixels per inch. A sufficient resolution for any type of task, whether to play, read or play.
The panel is well calibrated from the factory, and we have not appreciated that the whites are more blue or orange than the account. The colors have correct saturation, but here is a small catch, and that is that by default, the color mode of the adjustments is set to saturated.
If we set it to normal, the colors fade a bit more and do not look as good, so we recommend that you do not touch this setting.
The company this time has opted for a hole in the screen for the front camera, located in the upper left corner. It does not bother at all and the apps adapt to it so that it does not interfere with the interface, although that means slightly reducing the surface of the screen when playing.
The response speed of the screen is what is expected in a terminal with these characteristics. The panel responds immediately to our touches and offers a smooth experience.
Obviously, the 90 hertz refresh rate on its screen favors the fluidity and smoothness of the animations when scrolling in time-type apps and games optimized for these refresh rates.
Motorola Edge Utility
Is this innovative design worth it? Visually it is very striking, you take the phone and the first thing that catches your attention is that great curve that the screen has.
But on a technical and productive level it can make the viewing angles of this panel worse, although the screen looks great on the sides, there are two huge gray shadows that make the experience worse.
The curvature of the Motorola Edge eats away some content and can be annoying when playing games. The curved screen adds very little to the daily experience, it can be configured to activate various functions and gestures to make navigating the phone easier.
Motorola Edge Specifications
This device has 6 GB of RAM and a snapdragon 765 processors that is not the version of the 765 g. It also has an Adreno 620 GPU and 5G connectivity.
The set has a very good performance, the terminal allows us to play heavy and light games without jerks or lag. It does not overheat, or day-to-day applications behave properly.
Regarding the internal storage 128 GB UFS 2.1 are enough for most users, and if not, you can always expand this storage using micro SD cards.
It doesn't hurt to put an ear to the sound section of the Motorola Edge, which has a stereo speaker that sounds good even at high volumes. However, the most audio connoisseurs will notice that the bass lacks some punch and that the highs when they are very pronounced are saturated.
But to watch videos on YouTube, movies on Netflix or listen to podcats, it is more than enough, and in the worst case we always have that headphone jack that comes included with the phone.
If Motorola has been characterized by something since its return with motogp, it is to implement a clean Android operating system without any frills, without anything extravagant and that offers a fast, simple and useful experience for users.
Logically, the Motorola Edge was not going to be otherwise, so we have Android 10 with an aesthetic that supports that of pure Android but with certain seasonings hidden in the moto actions application.
Thanks to this application, users have the opportunity to customize certain parameters of the phone, such as the grid of the main screen, we can create themes or wallpapers.
In the part of motorcycle actions, we can also create functions such as the capture with three fingers, lift to unlock the device or the multimedia controls in the sound controls.
On the motorcycle screen, we can activate the attentive screen so that it does not turn off while we are looking at it and interactions with the edges of the screen.
In short, the operating system works wonders. Motorola usually does a very good job with its rendering of Android and that translates into very good performance.
But it may fall short for those who do take advantage of the additional options that other brands implement in the customization layers of their phones.
What about the security and biometrics section?
The Motorola Edge has a fingerprint reader, and we also have facial recognition. But how does it work? Motorola's fingerprint reader is optical, which means that it needs light.
The performance is correct, although it can be improved, it is enough to unlock the terminal. But we have to leave the finger on the screen for a little less than a second and in a very specific area for it to detect it.
As a counterpoint, the failure rate is very low and although it may be somewhat more subjective, it is very natural to put your finger on the screen to unlock it. We also have facial unlocking in two dimensions, the configuration is very fast and the performance does not differ from other terminals with similar technology.
It is useless to have a Motorola Edge with correct performance with a clean operating system if it does not have a battery capable of giving it life. But in this case we have a 4,500 battery that according to Motorola is capable of offering up to two days of use.
A somewhat optimistic estimate that depends on many factors, from the quality of the network to the use we make of the terminal. But the real autonomy is not bad at all.
In general, with its use we have been able to achieve between 8 and 9 hours of active screen on average, reaching the end of the day without problem.
Now, fast charging is not as fast as we might expect. Motorola Edge supports up to 18 watts of power, which is not bad for a mobile phone with a 3000 milliamp battery, but it is for one with 4500 milliamps as in this case.
In this sense, the Motorola Edge takes 50 minutes to go from 0 to 50% and just over two hours to fully charge.
The Motorola Edge cameras
The company has prepared a module of 4 rear cameras captained by a 64 MP sensor that in practice takes 16 MP photos thanks to the technology of the pixel combining software.
The second sensor has a 16 MP wide angle with f2.2 aperture and 116 degrees of field of view that not only works as a wide angle, but we can also use it as a macro.
The third sensor is an 8 MP telephoto with optical zoom of the increases, and finally we also have a top sensor to make depth measurements.
As for the front camera, Motorola opts this time for a 25 MP sensor that also uses quad pixel technology to take effective 6 MP photographs with more light.
When the light accompanies the camera, it achieves good results, with natural colors and a little aggressive processing. The level of detail is good, even when we zoom in 100% in an area and the management of highlights and shadows with hdr is correct.
With the wide angle we can achieve more striking results with more scene, the 16 MP resolution is appreciated. The detail is that it is better preserved, but it is still true that there are obvious differences between the main sensor and the wide angle.
The two-magnification zoom, meanwhile, manages to maintain the level of detail at a glance. But the white balance does not harmonize with the main sensor, we can see that the image is warmer with the 64 MP camera, although the result is positive.
Finally, as for the macro, the same as in other terminals. It is good to have them for specific occasions, but it is not a way that we are not going to take advantage of it on a daily basis.
In addition, as it takes a while to take the photo, it is not difficult for the subject to come out mobile or the camera allows us to force 64 MP so that we can take larger photos.
If the camera convinces by day and achieves good results, at night quite the opposite. The 64 MP sensor manages to save the scene at the cost of uploading and subduing grain and washing the image.
But all is not lost, because Motorola has not forgotten the night mode, which this time is called night vision. This mode that takes a long exposure to rescue light, which, far from being the best night mode, is noticeable for the better.
The image is less washed out than with the automatic mode, it has more light and the details are much better preserved. Regarding the internal camera, it can be noted that the selfie by day is very good and offers a more than correct final image.
The subject has a good level of detail, the lights are well managed and the hdr does its job by rescuing the highlights from the background and slightly lifting the shadows.
On the other hand, at night the night selfie is not bad. But it is not the best of the mid-range either. The subject has a sufficient level of detail, but in the photo as a whole you can see the washing and processing when we enlarge the image a bit.
On the glass section, it is a pleasant surprise, since the Motorola Edge allows recording in 4K at 30 fps. Although it is appreciated to be able to reach 60 frames per second, the truth is that the result is perfect, but it is not at the height of the high range.
At night, the level of detail is fresh and noise soon appears in the videos. Also, when light is scarce, the autofocus system makes another problem to bring the scene into focus. Noise is also much more evident.
