4 things that are illegal on WhatsApp and that you have surely done
WhatsApp is the most popular instant messaging platform in the world and this is reflected in the more than 2,000 million users.
The vast majority of WhatsApp users receive at least one message a day. This means that every day a series of actions are carried out that you consider "common", but that can become ideal.
Surely you think that you have not done anything illegal within the instant messaging platform. However, we can assure you that you have done it, even, you may do it every day and without even knowing it.
Today we are going to talk to you about 4 things that you surely do on WhatsApp (or any other messaging application) and that you do not know are illegal.
4 illegal things you probably do
1. Sharing screenshots without consent
Many people tend to do this on a regular basis, whether it's for a funny response from a colleague, a congratulations, or something else. However, distributing a screenshot without the person's consent is illegal.
It is important to mention that sharing a screenshot where the sender can be identified in a data protection violation. This not only applies to photographs or ID, but any element that identifies the person, including, of course, names.
Even though it's unlikely your friends will sue you for sharing a screenshot, it's important to know that it's a crime. This applies mainly in the event that you do group captures, since you never know who can sue you for damages.
2. Broadcast audio, photos or videos
Surely you have ever shared a photo or a voice note that has reached you on WhatsApp. Let's be clear, we've all done it at some point, but this is a crime you should avoid. This includes showing a voice memo to someone you meet, you don't even need to send it to them.
You would be surprised at the number of lawsuits and sanctions that the Spanish Data Protection Agency has imposed due to this. Many people often file lawsuits for the distribution of audiovisual material without their consent.
This usually occurs with intimate photos or videos, however, it can be applied with any piece of audiovisual material. So, as far as possible you should avoid committing this crime.
3. Adding person to personal groups without their consent
One of the most common and recurring crimes that people commit is this. The fact of adding a person to a group without their consent is a crime contemplated in the data protection regulations.
If you want to add a person to a group (even your family's group) you need to ask their permission to do so. And if you think that no one sues for this issue, you would be surprised at the number of people who do.
So, the next time you go to add your aunt to the family WhatsApp group, make sure you have her permission to do so.
4. Add strangers to public groups
Public groups are also a problem, since adding unknown people (even with their consent) can become a headache. This is because there is sensitive data that is exposed to other people, mainly your phone number.
That is why if you are going to create a public group between people who do not know each other (such as a group of fans) you must be careful. The Spanish Agency for Data Protection has already issued many fines related to this issue.
