The press release issued by the Foreign Ministry indicates that Maduro expressed his solidarity and support for Vladimir Putin and the people of Russia, due to the tensions with Ukraine and the United States.

During the conversation, Maduro thanked Putin for the help of the Russian Government in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic, through the shipment of vaccines and medicines, which have served to guarantee the health of Venezuelans.

In turn, Putin expressed support and backing for the defense of the sovereignty of the people of Venezuela and its economic development. He also ratified the invitation for Maduro to Russia to strengthen the alliance of both countries.

During their conversation, the presidents evaluated the results of their cooperation, highlighting the 12% increase in the commercial issue of both countries. They also raised the development of more air routes between Venezuela and Russia.

Russia is one of the main political and economic allies of Nicolás Maduro, since he was in power in 2013.

Relations between the two nations

The ties between the two nations were strengthened during the government of the late President Hugo Chávez (1999-2013).

Nicolás Maduro has managed to maintain the alliance with Russia, even though many countries in the international community did not recognize him as president of Venezuela; through controversial elections rejected by the international community, where he was re-elected as president in 2018.

The Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Riabkov, declared a week earlier that he did not rule out the deployment of military forces in Cuba and Venezuela.

Dmitry Peskov, a Russian spokesman, avoided giving answers about whether military infrastructure would be deployed in Venezuelan territory, assuring that Russia, hand in hand with Putin, seeks to guarantee the security of his country.
