Micron's new SSD could be the future of mobile device storage
An SSD can help the performance of your device.

We are already reaching the stage where mobile devices have TB of internal storage, but there is still a long way to go before they include SSDs. However, this gap could be reduced thanks to the new product developed by Micron.

In essence, it is an SSD that has up to 2 TB of storage, but whose most outstanding feature is its size.

Its length, in one of its versions, of no more than 3 centimeters, could represent the future of storage and processing within mobile devices.

But… What is an SSD? Let's review

Its acronym refers to “Solid State Disk”, which is nothing more than an element that has the function of data storage. Likewise, its objective is to greatly increase the speed as well as the latency of the device where it is used.

They are called Solid State Disk since they do not have any mechanical element inside, unlike the traditional HDD (Hard Drive Disk). This feature allows them to be much quieter as well as more efficient.

The operation of an SSD is determined by the 3D NAND memory chips, where each manufacturing company adapts it in its own way. That is, depending on their capabilities, they can stack many chips for higher performance.

What is the use of an SSD for us?

The reason is simple: the speed and performance increase of your device. Since its main function is to store data, it can serve as a substitute or complement to an HDD.

Traditional hard drives could be a thing of the past.

In this sense, if we implement a separate SSD to our computer, which works with an HDD, we can improve its performance. How? Well, installing the operating system as well as the priority programs in your day to day.

Also, it should be noted that the size of an SSD is its most important factor. That is, it is much smaller than a traditional HDD, but without losing power in its capacity.

It works silently, it does not consume as much energy, it improves latency, but the most important thing is the price.

Indeed, over the years, it becomes much cheaper for anyone who wants to optimize their device.

Now, what does Micron bring us with its new SSD?

The main novelty is the size it has, accompanied by a large amount of storage.

Although an SSD is much smaller than an HDD, sometimes, as in the 32 TB models, they have a high length.

But Micron, in this case, brings us what could be the smallest SSD in the world, with only 22 x 30 mm in length.

It is said that it could be the future of storage, as it is called to be a fundamental element of the mobile devices of the next generations. Indeed, it could be part of smartphones, drones, consoles, computers, laptops and even cars.

How is it possible?

As we mentioned before, an SSD is made up of small chips, where each company does its best in the way of amassing them. Therefore, the more they accumulate, the higher the performance of the disk.

Micron's new range is characterized by stacking up to 176 layers of NAND storage. To realize the magnitude and power that it possesses, it is enough to see that conventional models only reach up to 96 mantles.

Micron plans to launch its new SSD in three versions that will vary depending on their size, since they are available for each storage.

However, eyes are on the 22x30mm M.2 version, available in 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. Also, we have a 22x42mm model, as well as a 22x80mm one ; all having the 3 different storage sizes.

Smaller, less power?

Not necessarily. Rather, the effect is just the opposite, as the world's smallest SSD made by Micron promises to pack a punch.

And it is that, for the same reason of its small size, it implies that the information layers are much closer. Therefore, it greatly facilitates the transmission of data once it is in operation.

It should be noted that its useful life will be fulfilled once it reaches 600 TBW, known as the written terabytes. The latter is for the 2 TB models.

Its availability remains to be seen, since the company is currently sending it to stores. Therefore, it will be a matter of weeks before it is available, and its official price is known.
